If we look back to the history of coins, the older hand struck coins came in various shapes and sizes. Once the coins started being machine struck, the shape was more standardized. Normally coins are round in shape. Over a period of time, there are quite a few other shapes as well that are used.

There are coins that are triangle in shape to all the polygons till 15 sides. There are some that go beyond these numbers.

Then there are coins with holes. There are also coins that are scalloped.This website gives the details of such coins
